Hundreds of ground-breaking books capturing lesbian and gay experience have been published in recent decades - novels that have entertained, educated and literally saved lives! We want to find out which of these novels the British public cherishes above all others.

If you are not familiar with lesbian and gay fiction, and would like to expand your horizons, we've got a recommended list of contemporary classics to get you started.

The Big Gay Read is co-ordinated by queerupnorth, commonword, Time to Read and Manchester, Salford & Blackpool Library services. The winner of the Big Gay Read will be announced at a special event during the queerupnorth Festival in May 2006.
